Concert Review: Lady GaGa [The Fame Ball Tour]

The Fame Ball Tour

March 27th, 2009; Bronson Centre (Ottawa, Ontario)

Lady GaGa featuring Chester French & The White Tie Affair

Lady GaGa’s concert on March
27th, 2009 at the Bronson Centre in Ottawa, Ontario was more than just a concert. It was an entertaining show displaying this generation’s pop princesses strong vocals, energetic dance routines, fashion trendy dresses and overall ability to put on a completely live and entertaining concert. There aren’t many singers these days that can complete all those tasks and still sing live.

After two opening acts (Chester French & White Tie Affair...I didn't like the latter band), GaGa finally claimed her throne: the stage. Starting with a cool video intro that ended with “My name is Lady GaGa and this is my hausss…”, Lady GaGa appears on stage in a big costume performing future single, Paparazzi. In this costume, GaGa was almost pinned to the spot, but delivered a breathtaking performance of the song. Immediately after Paparazzi, GaGa performed a snippet of Starstruck before jumping into LoveGame, her third North American single. Using the aid of a disco stick, backup dancers and cool costumes, Lady GaGa gave this song more than justice with an amazing performance. The show continued with Beautiful Dirty Rich, The Fame, and Money Honey, which were all energetic and heavy dance and routine oriented performances. In between these performances GaGa told the audience, “People say Lady GaGa is a lie. That’s true, I am a lie….and I fight to make that the truth every day”. This was not only a message to the haters, but a way of showing her humbling personality. She slowed it down a little with the next performance of Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say); a song about moving on. For the performance, she rides on a old fashioned Vespa , which fits in with the old-school tone of the song and the accompanying music video. Upon completion of the song, GaGa left the stage to take a break and change costumes and left Parisian DJ, Space Cowboy to do an instrumental interlude. For those unfamiliar with Space Cowboy, he is a UK based DJ who has produced tracks and remixes for Nadia Oh, Fergie, as well as Lady GaGa on her songs Starstruck and Christmas Tree.

GaGa’s return in a bubble outfit that was not only remarkable, but also genius. It was time to slow it down for an acoustic piano performance of Poker Face and new song, Future Love. This not only showcased Lady GaGa’s amazing vocals, but her connection with the fans. Before performing Poker Face, GaGa told her fans it was the last time she would perform the song when she is 22 (her birthday was a day after the concert). Before she could continue (or finish) her sentence, the auditorium began to sing, (in a perfect chorus ),“Happy Birthday”. GaGa began to cry and could not sing her song without choking on her tears. She told her fans that she would play the piano, and they could complete the song, “I can’t even complete the fucking song”. As the fans sang the song, she remained in tears and finally got it together for the performance of Future Love. The song, which does not appear on any album or release, is a sweet but crude song where she sings, “I wanna f-f-f-f-fuck you Japan”. At the end of the song, she told her fans that she doesn’t care if they came to see her or to criticize her, or whatever, but as long as they have a good time at the show, she’d be content. She went on to sing her hit #1 single, Just Dance before ending the show. It was evident she saved the best for last as; the performance was filled with energy and enthusiasm. After leaving the crowd anticipating for more, GaGa returned to perform an encore featuring her dance oriented Boys Boys Boys and the original version of her second #1 single, Poker Face. Both of these songs were given incredible performance and gave a conclusion where everyone longed for more.

Overall, the performance showed what a pop show should look like. GaGa successfully delivered a lively and energetic concert that’s only flaw was too short of a set list. Combining fashion, heavy choreography, live vocals, and crowd interactions, GaGa showed that she is an artist that is here to stay.

Live MY Life

Live Your Life – T.I. featuring Rihanna

Live your life. No tellin’ where it will take ya, so live your life….my life....my life. Similar to the song, I lived my life on Friday March 6, 2009. Arguably one of the most unforgettable days of my life, Friday was filled with excitement, joy, anticipation and thrill.

We’ll track back a few days to Tuesday March 3, 2009 when everything started. Off a Hilary forum I visit, I found out that Hilary Duff was coming to Toronto on Friday for her Blessings in a Backpack tour. She would be attending a charity dinner for Blessings in a Pack at Ultra Supper Club in Toronto. Exciting enough already right? Well, I then found out that I could attend that dinner by simply calling Ultra and making a reservation. I was in class, Politics to be specific, at the time. My heart was beating very fast and I rushed out to call and make a reservation. After a phone call and a short conversation, the reservation was made. Step 1 of 2 was done. It was now time for me to find a way to get from Ottawa to Toronto. It was easier than I thought, as my dad was willing to let me come back home for the weekend provided that I’m up-to date with school. I agreed and booked my ticket. Step 2 of 2 was done. Now all I had to do was wait for Friday.

Friday came surprisingly quick as I was so busy with school that I didn’t have time to think about how long till the big day. The day started off bad as I missed my 5:45am train to Toronto. I’ll skip the details of that but thankfully I was able to catch the next one at 8:30 and still make it in time for everything. A few long hours later I arrived in Toronto and took the subway to Yorkdale where I surprised my mom with my appearance. (She didn’t know I was coming and my dad told her to conveniently go to the mall at that time…again I’ll skip the details). My mom was shocked but glad I was home. I explained and by the time I was done we got home.

Upon reaching home the first thing I needed to do was go to the library to check my e-mail. Ultra wasn’t the only place Hilary was going….she was also going to MuchMusic to appear on the show MuchOnDemand. The relevance this had to me was the following: I’ve signed up to be a Webcam Correspondent for MuchOnDemand where I talk to the hosts of MuchMusic via phone and webcam to fill part of their show. The hosts aren’t the only people I talk to. When celebrities appear on the show I get to ask them a question. As Hilary Duff is my favourite artist, I emailed the MuchMusic team asking if I could webcam with her and they said they’d try and get me on. I went to the library to follow up and they told me to make questions and come on at 3:30 to check my camera. This gave me so much excitement, happiness and God knows how much joy and thrill. I was not only going to have dinner with Hilary, but before that I was going to talk to her via Webcam!

I didn’t have internet at my house so I went to my cousin’s house. At his house I put up my Hilary poster and brought some of the many Hilary CDs I wanted to show her on webcam. I was ready to get my cam checked. A few angle adjustments later, I was ready to be on cam with Hilary. The time was around 4:15 and Hilary was to appear on the show around 5:30. The waiting made me restless. I was going to be talking to my favorite celebrity who I’ve been a fan of since the 8th grade. Now in first year University I was no less of a fan.

The time came. MuchMusic called me and my cam was on. It was only a few minutes till the host Leah would cue to the webcam question.

“We’re now going to get to a webcam question, Khizer from Ottawa, Khizer are you there?” asked Leah. “I’m here,” I exclaimed. Right then it was the moment. I was star struck but held my composure. Hilary was excited that I was from Ottawa as her boyfriend just got drafted for the Ottawa Senators and Leah was raving about the huge Hilary poster I had in the background. I told Hilary how I was a huge fan and showed her a bit of my CD collection that I’ve worked so hard on. “Aw, thank you”, is how she responded. She seemed very grateful. I proceeded to ask my question (not the question that I would’ve liked to ask but Much told me it was the best one I came up with): “You’ve become a huge threat to the industry as you are part of film, fashion, television and music. If you could choose one to do for the rest of your career, which would it be and why?” I had put her on the spot, “Oh no!” she exclaimed. She answered the question with acting. I knew she was going to say that but a part of me hoped it would’ve been music as that is my favorite aspect of her career. She answered and said thank you for the question and unexpectedly shouted, “Go Ottawa!!”I laughed, and it was over. All I could think in my head was that she just said Go Ottawa. Could I ask for anymore? Of all the webcam questions I’ve done with celebrities, this was by far the best and most enjoyed.

After finishing the Webcam question, I went home and got ready for the dinner at Ultra. Within 20 minutes I was ready to go: I had my camera, the CDs I wanted signed (one for me and the other for a friend), a marker for the signing, and of course my best smile and favorite outfit on. My dad dropped me off to Yorkdale and I took the subway from there to the stop where I needed to get off (Osgoode). I was restless, excited and had butterflies in my stomach. After arriving at Osgoode station, I began to walk towards Ultra Supper Club. It was about a five minute walk and was just across from MuchMusic. I saw the red-carpet and the Ultra Supper Club / Blessings in a Backpack back drop for pictures. It was crowded with about 30 people consisting of fans and photographers. Since I had a reservation, I went up to the guard and told him my name and information. There were a few complications (apparently they put me under some other girls name whose table I was sitting at). I finally got in, when some disaster struck.

As I entered I bumped into some forum friends and one of them was like, “Khizer, if you have a camera they will take your batteries away.” The minute she said that, one of the employees of Ultra Supper Club came up to me and said, “Oh you have a camera, I’ll need your batteries.” I was so excited to get a picture with Hilary and at the event in general, I was disappointed that this happened. I would have snuck it in, but I lost that opportunity. I explained to the hostess that I came from Ottawa solely for Hilary and she explained that a professional photographer will be taking pictures and if the time is right I can try and get him to take a picture with Hilary. I was glad there was a string of hope I could hold on to.

I get into the restaurant, get my coat checked and go inside to find a seat. I see my friend’s mom and she talks to me about how the earlier dinner service went and told me about the food. After talking to her and finding a dinner table that I was assigned to, I went to the door of the restaurant waiting for Hilary. A few long minutes later, she’s coming down the gateway of Ultra into the restaurant. OMGSPAZATTACKHALLELUGAHOMGAHZZZ! Everyone is crowding around her, she’s full of smiles taking pictures and signing autographs and I wait patiently for her to come past me. A few seconds later, she’s right in front of me.

“Hey Hilary”, I exclaim, “Can you sign this CD for me.”

She smiles, “Sure, what’s your name?”

“It’s Khizer”

She laughs, “That’s Canadian eh, spell it”

I spelt it for her then asked, “Do you remember me, Hilary?”

She looks up at me in the eyes, and tries to remember
.
I helped her out, “I was on Webcam today when you were at MuchMusic, from Ottawa.”

“Oh yes!” and then she pauses…”Wait, if you’re from Ottawa, how are you in Toronto. YOU TRICKED US!” She had a coy smile.

“Noooo,” I explain. “I actually came down all the way from Ottawa to Toronto just for you today.”

She smiled in appreciation, “Wow, thank you that means a lot to me.”

I smiled back and then asked, “So are you going to be at the Senators game next Friday?”

“Oh my God! What day is it today?” She pauses. She laughs. She thinks. “Yes, I should be at the games, why are you going?”

“Yup, maybe I’ll see you there,” I say.

“For sure,” she says with a smile.

Before she moved on, I asked, “Hilary can we take a picture?”

“Sure!” she says.

So we pose up, I look at the professional photographer and indicate to him that I want a picture. He gives me a little confused look for a few seconds, but then takes the picture. I was so happy!

“Thanks Hilary”, I exclaim so excited.

“No problem! Thanks so much and enjoy the dinner,” she says with a huge smile.

Behind her, Stan Curtis (founder of Blessings in a Backpack charity) tells me thanks for coming and he was also in appreciation.

From then on in, everything went amazing. I was so happy I got a professional picture with her and got to talk to her for more than just a split second! As I made my way inside, the hostess who took my batteries and whom I explained my situation to told me that she cued the photographer to take our picture when he was giving me the confused look. I said many thanks to her and was super grateful. I went to my assigned table and saw some friends over there and we all exchanged our stories about Hilary encounters that day. We see Hilary at her dinner table with Leah Miller and some other VIP people. It was so exhilarating sitting just a few tables from Hilary and having dinner in the same setting as her. Time came to order dinner, and I ordered the "Sweet corn and problano soup, smoked chicken and dried sour cherry terrine" as my appetizer, "Grilled stirling silver beef tenderloin, truffled boniato mash, idiazabal cheese, jalapeno leek butter" as my main dish and lastly, "Mango mousse with tropical fruit compote" as my dessert. While waiting for the dinner to arrive, we went to the back of the restaurant where a silent auction on Hilary signed goods were up for bids. I didn’t bid but it was definitely cool to see. Hilary and her crew come into the back and they do some press pictures with the items. At this point, I’m in awe at how close we are and how we are in the same setting. I had my friends CD that I tried to get signed, but it was difficult and awkward at the time.

We get back to dinner and eat what we ordered. It was fantastic. It was superb. It was so fine. It was so high class. I felt like Fergie in her song Glamorous. During dinner, Stan Curtis and Hilary Duff gave a speech on the charity and the dinner continued. It was good times throughout until it finally came time to leave because the restaurant was turning into a club/bar and I wasn’t 19 for another 3 weeks. I grab my coat and wait for the others to leave. When they are out, I go to Hilary’s table. Her body guard is hinting for me to go but I wasn’t going to lose the opportunity to say bye to her and tell her the awesome night I had.

“Hey Hilary, I was just about to leave but I wanted to say that I had an amazing time at the dinner with you. It was great to meet you,” I say.

“Aw, thank you so much for coming! Have a safe trip back to Ottawa,” she says so sweetly.

At this point all that was running through my mind was that she remembered as well as she wished me a safe trip back to Ottawa!!!

“Thanks! I really support your charity,” I reply not knowing what to say as I was speechless after her last remark.

“Aw thank you! I’ll be at the games next week,” she says.

“Maybe we’ll see each other there,” I reply.

“For sure, have a good night!!” she says.

“Thanks, you too!” I reply.

As I walk away, both Hilary and Leah are smiling and waving at me. I noticed while talking to Hilary that she had ordered the same entrĂ©e as me. The feeling I had inside me was indescribable; my night was just perfect. It felt unreal; it felt like something you see on TV or in a movie. I get outside, and meet up with my friend. We take a picture on the red carpet and feel like celebrities. The night was coming to an end as I took the subway home and got picked up by my parents. I’m so thankful that I got to experience such a night. I feel like in this one night, I lived a life. Everything that could have happened did and it all went smoothly. I guess I made T.I. and Rihanna proud as I lived my life, my life, my life….

Struck by New Years in Ottawa

Paralyzer - Finger Eleven

Well I'm not paralyzed but I seem to be struck by you. That's how that song goes. Similarly, that's how I was feeling last night about the way things went down over New Years. Ironically, or well more of a pun on my part that's the first song I heard as the clock struck from 11:59 to 12:00; 2008 to 2009.

I've never really been a "New Years go out and party type person". Actually this marks the first year where I actually went to a New Years countdown and party. Most years I either go to my cousins house because her birthday is on the 1st or I stay home and just sleep it out or stay up till 12:00, say Happy New Years to myself and go back to bed. I know, dorky, but yes that's how its been over the previous years. This year I had more excitement. I was told by many that New Years in Ottawa is breathtaking and amazing as they have fireworks at the Parliament and being the capitol of Canada I found that easy to believe. I would be with my friends and wouldn't have parents to tell me to come home since its too late. It was definitely a night to look forward to.

The night started off as an epic fail as most of my friends I had intended on having over couldn't make it due to last minute events including but not limited to getting grounded or not having a method of getting to my place (yes, the busses are still on strike). It ended up just being the two of us hanging out at my place playing Wii and watching Simpsons. Closer to 11 we got a ride upto the Parliament and were shocked at the lack of people there. We weren't sure what the cause of that was...despite it being -20 degrees Celsius outside, we were doubtful that the cold would stop people on new years. Our strongest hunch was that it'd get busier closer to 12. So we went for a stroll admiring the lights in Ottawa and around 11:40 got back to the Parliament when we heard a band playing and a bunch of people gathered around the National Arts Centre (a little across the Parliament). We followed the sounds and the noise and heard a really good band playing. We ended up watching that and came to the conclusion that that's the best play to hang out.

The band was really good. We were trying to figure out who it was because they sounded very good. 11:58 soon approached and the band got ready to countdown. At this point, we weren't really sure what was going to happen; did they change the fireworks location? maybe the Parliament's fireworks would start right after the band's countdown? The countdown continued...5...4....3....2...1! The stage broke out in sparkle shooters simultaneously while everyone shouted Happy New Years. This was followed by fireworks. The beggining was admittedly very lame with hope for a good finale. The fireworks continued and then ended 2 minutes later. 12:02 and all is done. The fireworks were probably one of the worsts I've seen. They looked like they were those that kids buy at the store and light off at the park with just a little more flare. Majorly dissapointed and shocked my friend and I were both speechless. "WOW?" I thought to myself before saying out loud. 12:03 and the band started again with a really familiar song that turned out to be Paralyzer which is when I established the band was Finger Eleven....or so I figured. It could've been a cover band. After listening to the song (which was on my favourite songs of 2007), we took a cab home.

This brings me to the present, still reflecting on last night. One of the reasons I stayed in Ottawa for new years was to experience the thrills and excitement of New Years in Canada's Capitol. According to many residents in Ottawa, fireworks in Ottawa are amazing and is the best way to experience the change from one year to another. Something went wrong this time around. Despite having a good band to perform, the organization of this year's event was poor. I expected more from the capitol city of Canada. I wonder what tourist's must have thought when they saw the celebration or little of in Canada's capitol. Not only was it a dissapointment but it was also a reflection on Canada itself. Maybe part of it was because of the OC Transpo strike? If so, that brings up another venting issue (read entry titled "I Walk Alone"). Even still, New Years celebrations shouldn't be dependant on whether the busses are running or not. Although the New Year's experience wasn't the greatest, the lights around the cirty Parliament and music did have some redemption. Let's just say this being the first time going out for New Years, it may very well be the last...at least in Ottawa.

Year In Review

Circus - Britney Spears

All the eyes on me, in a centre of a ring, just like a circus.
That's how Britney Spears' current single goes and that's also how my 2008 went, like a circus. Reflecting on 2008 it was a big year for me. It was the year where I turned the big 1-8. It was the year where I graduated from high school. It was the year where I moved from Ancaster to Toronto. It was the year where I started University in Ottawa. Overall, it was a year of change...just like a circus.

ACT 1: The Ringleader

2008 started off as a promising year. At the time I had gotten an early acceptance and scholarship from the University of Ottawa and was pending on an acceptances from Western and UofT (both of which I later got accepted into). My circle of friends was amazing. I was in a good relationship. My parents were proud of my acceptance as was my brother. The one downside was his rocky relationship with his ex who walked out on him. Little did I know this would cause his eventual departure from home.

ACT 2: Departure

My brother's ex-wife walked out on him late 2007 leaving him shocked, confused, sad among many other mixed emotions. How could someone who's been married 4 years just walk out with no notice, no talk, no nothing? That still boggles my mind. This was a crucial time where my bro needed his family most and day to day I was by his side trying to do what I could to cheer him up. Most of the time we would rent a movie and watch that or I would call him a "hooch" and a semi smile would make a way across his face. As time went on, he slowly got better with the situation. It was in late February when the big news came. My brother had attended this seminar in the U.S.A. where he found out about a posting in a hospital near the Middle East. This was his big break. He needed to get away from the place that always reminded him of his once happy marriage and he was always talking about going overseas to work. Together, this was the perfect opportunity and he jumped on it. We were all extremely happy for him, however I had this feeling of sadness that I'd be losing my brother. He wasn't only a brother, he was like my best friend. Throughout drama filled high school and time of big decisions, he was by my side helping me. In May the big day came, and he left. He was gone, right before my prom and graduation and everything. He was gone....and so was part of my life.

Through the beginning of the year I was also in a good relationship that dated back to fall of '07. Before the relationship, the two of us were friends who met at a Hilary Duff event at MuchMusiceach (oh the irony). The relationship was nice and we had both grown fond of other, however by March the two of us broke up. After this, a series of dramatic events that followed. One of the reasons it grew to be so dramatic was because of how close we had gotten in the time we were together. We got to know a lot about each other and to this date, the two of us can predict what one another would do in a specific situation. Although we had hoped that we'd be good friends after the breakup, the first few months were more involved in handling the situation and getting each other comfortable with being just friends. It was easier said then done, especially on her end. The period became very dramatic and involved some funny, some angry and some hurtful moments. Eventually as we both pushed for the friendship, we became a bit more comfortable with the idea. Dramatic events still occurred throughout the year as the relationship became very turbulent. That being said, to date we still talk and have a great time when we do so. Although one chapter closed, another opened.

Suddenly I see a path that's changing directions but leading to a better future.

ACT 3: Instruction

Highschool and University were both really big words in 2008. The first six months of the year were dedicated to my last six months in highschool. After four years, it was really coming to an end. It was something a lot of people were looking forward to but also something I know at some point people would miss. 2008 was a great year in Highschool, I had an amazing semester and at least a few good friends in each class. After school hangouts were a regular and as the weather got better and nearing early April, my bud and I would ride our bikes to school in the morning. I had English, Comm Tech, Data Management, and French. I enjoyed going to all those subjects. I think part of the reason for that was because it was senior year and ultimately the last semester of highschool...for good! Classes went well and it wasn't until Prom that everything was rushing to an end.

ACT 4: Celebration

On Friday March 28th, I got my license. It was also the same day as my 18th birthday! Goodbye childhood, hello adulthood! (I was thinking that then, but trust me it doesn't really change). My birthday brought some good surprises. I guess one of my biggest joy was getting my license as I had craved it for a long time. The second biggest was the surprise party that my cousins and family held at my house. My brother and I were at the gym and we had an extra long workout. Finally he got a call and all I heard was "put it in the garage. I'll be home". I had some suspicious but not many. Finally I got home and all my cousins welcomed me to my birthday party. It was amazing. The following Sunday I held a joint birthday dinner with a friend who's birthday was during the same week. Because we had mutual friends, this worked out well. The dinner was at Jack Astor's with an "after party" at Starbucks and then my house. My 18th birthday was probably one of my more memorable ones!

When Prom came around on May 30th, everyone was pretty excited. It was on a Friday (which ironically was the day of celebrations for me) and in the morning we had classes. I was able to get out around 12:00, went for a quick lunch with a friend and then went to go get corsages for our dates. We had to go all the way to Limeridge Mall and get it from the Fortinos there. I still wonder why I didn't just order it from the neighbourhood Fortinos. Regardless, we picked up the corsages and then head to the Meadowlands to pick up my co-worker and really good friend to help me get ready for prom. I dropped my friend to his house, I went to mine with my co-worker/friend and got ready for the big night. This took about an hour however, having no parents at home was really beneficial (my dad was at work and my mom went to Pakistan for a few months). When I was finally ready, I went to go pick up my friend and then we went to our other friends house where we would meet our dates and get ready to go to another friends house where the limos would be. Once there we took some professional pictures before dividing ourselves into two groups for the limos. The limos were nice and it was a fun way to get to the event. When we got to the event it self, (held at Liuna Gardens) it was a bit different than we had expected. For example, although this doesn't matter, they didn't have Prom King/Queen voting among other things. On top of that, the beginning kinda lagged as 2 and a half hours of Prom was spent on getting food, which didn't leave much time for the dance floor. That being said, it was still an enjoyable night being able to see all your friends, take pictures, and party for the last time. The after party was an "eventful" night. After being there for about an hour, a classmate of mine in grade 9 had overdosed, passed out and the police had to be called. I was parked in the driveway so it was a tough way to get out, but eventually I did and I got myself to a friends' house where we had a miniature after party there before I had to go home. Prom was definitely a great celebration to the ending of highschool.

Soon after that the end of highschool came so suddenly. Within a few weeks exams were over and Graduation Day was here. Unfortunately there were 3 significant people I wanted at my graduation that weren't; my mom, my brother, and my sister. My dad attended and one of my best friends came as well. The ceremony was nice but long...especially when my last name starts with P and they started with the A's. It was a good experience. Right after the ceremony we all saw each other ONE last time. We socialized, signed yearbooks, took pictures, discussed our futures, had food and ultimately tears. After that was over, my friend that came to the graduation and another one of my best friends went with my dad to Hutch's, a fish and chips restaurant located in front of a beach that merges into Lake Ontario. It was the start of summer.

Act 5: The After Party

Summer was a huge highlight of my 2008. Despite doing an online calculus course for the first 3 weeks of summer, I was able to make the most of it by hanging out with friends, searching for apartments with my dad, going to the beach, mall, shopping, Wonderland all that jazz. In the first half, I went with a group of us to Canada's Wonderland. We took two cars, well vans, and I was one of the drivers. We spent the whole day there and it was good times minus the fact that I lost my camera on one of the rides. Silly move on my part, but I guess it gave me an excuse to get a new one. This half included but wasn't limited to further trips to Wonderland (I believe 2 more), beaches, parks, movies, birthday parties, hangouts at the house and hikes in the woods. The second half was devoted mostly to packing up the house; this was probably the part that wasn't the most exciting especially since I didn't really want to move away from that house. Within the packing, I was able to fit in one of the summer's highlights which was the Ottawa Road Trip. 5 of my friends and I went to Ottawa and we stayed in my future (now current) condo, In that time we did everything from clubbing in Quebec to visiting a graveyard at night to sleeping on the balcony. The end of the road trip signified the end of the summer, the end of highschool days and the end of my presence in Ancaster.

The summer rushed to an end, my family and I did some final packing, I said my goodbyes to the Ancaster community and moved down to Toronto. It was ironic because when in Ancaster, I would love going to Toronto and would jump on any opportunity to go there, but it was different now. I stayed in my new house for literally 3-4 days. In those days, half of them were spent at my cousins until it was time for the big move to Ottawa. 2 moves, in 2 weeks.

Act 6: Alter-Ego

2008 was an eventful year in terms of some of my big passions which included media. The start of the year was amazing as I got to see the Spice Girls in their "Return of the Spice Girls" reunion tour in Toronto.....TWICE! Both with amazing seats, once with second row. The concert was breathtaking and to date my favourite concert. The day of my second Spice Girls concert I also had the opportunity to meet Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham. I went with two friends, then girlfriend and another mutual friend I met from a forum. Beckham was at Holt Renfrew and was doing meet and greets with people that came to the store. Although we were there since almost 8:00 in the morning and she was coming at 1:00, we found out when she got there that to get a picture we had to purchase something. This was a bummer, and instead we lived with an autograph. To date, I still regret not getting an item. It would've been worth it (for me at least). My ex fainted at the event and got to drink out of Posh's water cup and got a personal get better wish from Victoria. If only I could faint on the spot!

By being a In late April, I arranged and organized my Comm Tech class's class trip. One of the best things about this trip was that it was with my Comm Tech class which made up about 55% of my good friends. We went to Complexions make up school, toured the CBC building and finally and probably one of the highlights, MuchMusic. It was there where Much added me to their Webcam Correspondents list. As a webcam correspondent, Much calls me via Webcam and ask me to interview celebrities broadcasted live over their show MuchOnDemand. This was probably one of the better things that happened to me that year and by being a Webcam Correspondent I have thus far interviewed Tom Cochranne's daughter Evenne Cochranne, Melanie C, Jesse McCartney, and T-Pain. I also gave Canada my opinion on Mariah Carey's and Nick Cannon's engagement over the show. I wasn't done with MuchMusic yet, this year I also submitted an audition tape to be on their show called "The Shift" as well as their second MMVA Superstar Contest (last year I came in third place). Both of them were fun shoots and the later was also used as my final project in my Comm Tech class. This project held a lot of meaning to me as it was my final project in Comm Tech for good, and I made the most of it by having cameo appearances by many of my friends in the video. The same year in Comm Tech I also made a music video to One Republic's number 1 hit, Apologize with 2 of my good friends.

Spice Girls, Victoria Beckham, MuchMusic, and Comm Tech videos...could there possibly be more? Around May it was announced that Bollywood Legends would be coming to Canada. The good thing about living near Toronto is that almost every act comes to Toronto when they are on concert and yes this did include The Unforgettable Tour by Bollywood Superstars AishwaryaRai, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Akhsay Kumar, Priety Zinta, Riteish Deskhmukh, and Vishal & Shekhar. I got tickets the day they went on sale and eventually entered an essay contest where I described the many reasons I should get to meet the stars. One of the greatest days that year was when I got a message on my voicemail saying I won the contest and that I would be meeting all the Bollywood stars! This was huge! I grew up watching half of those stars and loving their movies. The concert was rocking and getting to meet the stars (at least the ones I did meet) was an amazing experience. Later that summer in August, I went with another one of my friends to the "Soundtrack of my Summer" concert which included Metro Station, Good Charlotte, Boys Like Girls and Maine. The concert was amazing and was well enjoyed. This was my last concert for the year (although I had really wanted to see Madonna and Lady Gaga dates and times weren't on my side).

Act 7: Rebirth

The last quarter of 2008 was devoted to a new beginning; new school, new city, new condo, new friends, new everything. It was like starting at square one, with the exception of me having one my best friends as my roommate. Coming to Ottawa was a good away to start a new beginning. Adjusting to university and the courses was a unique experience. One struggle was meeting new people as I didn't live on campus and each class had around 100+++ people. I started using the bus system which here in Ottawa is remarkable, (except for the fact they are on strike at the moment which makes me wonder about what I just said). In addition to that, living in Ottawa and living alone with a good friend was another fun thing about Ottawa. Finding new places, discovering new restaurants and everything was all part of the experiences. I think it is safe to say that Ottawa has more Shawarma restaurants than Hamilton has Tim Hortons. During this period, my roommate and also got a pet ferret. While in Ottawa I was also able to get close to my sister and her family again which was very nice. We have a really nice relationship right now which I hope continues to stay. Near the end of the year, I got a job at the mall working at the Calendar Club and Go! Games kiosk. It was a good way to spend the holidays at home and eventually brought me to the end of the year.

Act 8: Encore

When New Year's rang in, I knew 2009 would be completely different. I knew this would be a year of change. A metamorphosis. Will 2009 be a Circus just like 2008 or will it be something else...something different? I guess only time will tell.

You know you love me.

I Walk Alone

Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day

I walk a lonely road, the only one that I have ever known...I walk alone, I walk alone. That's how that song goes. As mentioned in my last entry, the OC Transpo (Ottawa Transit) has gone on strike and as a result walking has been my best friend. Because I don't live on residence, I rely on busses for all transportation and lately all I've had is my feet. The good thing was, my major exams were done so really the only transportation I had to do was getting to work and back everyday. The bad thing, I worked a whole week from Thursday to Sunday with just a Wednesday off. I actually like walking so that was never the problem. In fact, because I love snow so much, walking to work listening to my music was actually a lot of fun at the beggining, but a half hour wak to work and then back eventually drained me out when I got home.

So lets start off by talking about walk. Its a long, straight walk. I get out of my apartment and walk all the way down to my mall. No turning left, no turning right, just straight. A blind man would be in heaven! As much as I've enjoyed my experiences walking, thinking about the long run, I really need the busses to go off strike because soon my holidays will be over and it will be back to school. School is an hour away (by walk of course) and with 5 courses in the semester walking there and back everyday at various times wouldn't be the best option. That being said, spending 40 on a cab every day for 5 days wouldn't be the way I intend to spend the money I'm currently making at Go! Games. So really, I hope by new years all this is figured out and the strike is over!

To be honest, so many people rely on the bus system in Ottawa; University students, workers, seniors and without the transit we can only last so long! I'm not the only one; there are students who live on the opposite end of town that are paying their way to school and the last thing they need is to find a way to get there. I was reading an editorial today labelled "How the Grinch stole Transit which I found amusing and true.

So before I end this rant, I guess the bright side to this whole walking is the exercise (oh I make myself laugh) and really the time I need to myself to think and reflect upon myself and what I do and what I will do. In a way I'm glad I have the walking oppurtinity and a way to enjoy Ottawa's snow, however I do wish it ends soon enough so I can start getting around town normally.

It's Been A While...

Break The Ice - Britney Spears

It's been a while, I know I shouldn't have kept you waiting...but I'm here now. That's how that song goes. It definitely has been a while since my last post and I really don't know where to begin. The last month and half has been crazy busy with school and life in Ottawa that I haven't really gotten a chance to write much lately. Let's see if I can catch you up on everything going on...

About a month ago I went back to Toronto for the second time since I've been to Ottawa. This time the visit was longer and it was definitely more fun filled. I was able to go back to Ancaster once again and meet some friends and also went to Niagara Falls to meet a new friend whom I've gotten to know pretty well in a short period of time. The visit was generally on the positive end with some exceptions of course but overall I had a good time. I was pretty sure that was my last visit back for a while, however things changed and I went to Toronto sooner than I thought. After my second and final chemistry midterm on the 28th of November, I was preparing to go back to Toronto with my brother-in-law and sister. That was stalled with weather keeping us in Ottawa an extra day and as a result we went back the next day. The visit was very short indeed but it was very much enjoyed. Some friends visited and we checked out a restaurant called Moxies in Yorkdale and just hung out for a bit. I also spent some quality time with my parents and it had been a while since that happened.

After coming home the exam period started and luckily I only have two exams coming up for the semester. Of course good things do come at cost, and that cost was a bad exam schedule resulting in missing a relative's wedding. For the time remaining tho I was able to find a job which will keep me busy during the break.

I'm pretty excited for the upcoming break as I hear that winter in Ottawa brings many great festivities. These come at a price as well and that's very cold temperatures. As well, just today the OC Transpo (Ottawa Bus service) just went on strike! To some that means nothing, but to people like me that means no transportation! Heavily relying on the bus for everywhere I go, getting to my exam and getting to work will be a little dilemma, however I can walk to the latter so we'll see what happens.

Hopefully reading this has given you a little bit of an update on what's going on. Of all the blogs posted, this is probably the least interesting and probably most different from my typical blogs. What I'm trying to say is that there was a little break between entries, but holidays coming up, I'll be more up to date with the entries so keep a look out for those!
